Hotel des Mille Collines

Hôtel des Mille Collines is a renowned luxury hotel in Kigali’s vibrant and colourful city centre. The hotel is situated in the heart of the main shopping and commercial area, and only about 80 kilometres / 50 miles from one of Africa’s easiest gorilla-trekking destinations, Volcanoes National Park. This magnificent historic hotel boasts gorgeous views of the Kigali skyline and the lush green hills that the city extends over.

Hôtel des Mille Collines prides itself on offering superb culinary and fine dining experiences. La Terrasse provides guests with all-day dining overlooking the hotel’s flourishing green gardens, while the elegant Le Panorama is Kigali’s signature dining experience complimented with breath-taking views of the city’s twinkling lights and rolling hills.

Outside, overlooking the city, the hotel’s beautiful gardens feature a large swimming pool surrounded by an extensive patio set with sunloungers. In the adjacent small spa you can enjoy a massage: perhaps one using traditional wooded clubs called rungus to soothe aching muscles.

Hotel des Mille Collines’ 112 spacious rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable, without being luxurious. All have private bathrooms, satellite televisions, PC hook-ups and most other standard hotel amenities, but on our most recent visit in May 2017 we felt that they appeared a little dated and bland; quite a contrast to the smart foyer.

Take a dip in the hotel’s crystal-clear swimming pool and sink into a comfortable sun lounger with a quenching drink and a snack from the Pool Bar, also known as ‘Lieu de Vie’ (Place of Life). Or simply indulge in a de-stressing massage at the poolside massage banda.

Ask your Africa Safari Expert to arrange a fascinating city tour to explore clean, safe and friendly Kigali – its lively markets, the fascinating Muslim quarter and the moving genocide memorial in Gisozi are just a few places of interest.

After dinner, head to the stylish Legacy Lounge & Wine Bar for drinks, cigars, and fine blues and jazz music.

Hôtel des Mille Collines’ La Terrasse restaurant is an ideal spot to start your day. Situated beside the beautiful gardens, this restaurants bursts with delightful aromas and fragrances when fresh breads and pastries are served every morning.

Le Panorama is situated on the hotel’s fourth floor and offers a gourmet menu that varies from fine European meals to signature local dishes. It is a popular place for romantic dinners accompanied by superb views of the city’s skyline.

Activities at Kigali Serena Hotel

There are many cultural pursuits in Kigali the most poignant of which and a must do in our opinion is the Kigali Memorial Centre in Gisozi. The centre opened in April 2004, on the 10th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide which claimed over a million people in just 100 days.

Just south of Kigali, a 45-minute drive will take you to Nyamata and Ntarama where you can visit two local churches where scenes of serious atrocities were committed during the 1994 genocide.

Continuing your city tour, visit the Kandt Museum of Natural History to learn about the interdependency between living beings and their environment. Tour old Kigali where the colonial buildings now form the heart of Rwanda’s small businesses as well as visit the Kalpaki crafts centre with her many little stalls displaying a wide range of Rwandan curios, crafts and artefacts.  A visit to the Nyabugogo second-hand clothes market is also worthwhile.

Kigali Marriott Hotel
Kigali Marriott Hotel

Kigali Marriott Hotel is a smart international hotel with comfortable rooms and plenty of facilities. The hotel is a sister to the Marriott chain of hotels and provides the same comparably high standards of accommodation, food, and service as can be found at their other properties.

Kigali Marriott Hotel is located in the heart of Rwanda’s capital city, the certainly one of the better accommodation options in Kigali. With 254 rooms it is a large hotel with a somewhat impersonal feel. However, its contemporary design, the range of restaurants, lovely views and good central location make it a great choice for a short stay in Kigali.

The hotel has a large swimming pool surrounded by shaded loungers and flowerbeds planted with small palms. Up a set of stone steps is a raised terrace with further seating and low tables in a colour scheme of black and red. It has a small bar here, and friendly staff on hand to serve you a refreshing drink.

Kigali Marriott Hotel has 254 rooms and suites spread across eight floors. Whilst these vary in terms of their size and facilities, they all share floor to ceiling windows with views over Kigali. All the rooms come with either a king-sized bed or two double beds, and a writing desk and chair. Amenities include air-conditioning, a digital safe, tea and coffee facilities, a minibar, and a satellite TV. Each room has a well-appointed en-suite marble bathroom with a bathtub and a separate shower. All the rooms have been designed in a neutral color scheme, and are finished to a high standard, although there is very little to suggest you are in Rwanda.

The 25 suites are much more spacious than the standard rooms. The junior suites come with their own adjoining lounge, whereas the executive and presidential suites are vast, featuring their own private dining area and small kitchenette. The presidential suite also has a beautiful rooftop terrace.

There is a range of dining options at the Kigali Marriott:

  • Soko is a vibrant restaurant located in the central atrium and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • Cucina is an Italian restaurant serving a range of tasty pizzas and pasta, and provides a more formal atmosphere than Soko.
  • Iriba Bar and Terrace has the feeling of a trendy bar, serving specialty coffee by day and cocktails by night. Come here for a light lunch or an after-dinner drink.
  • Sarabi Grill opens for lunch and serves a range of drinks and light lunches; we understand that the burgers are excellent.

Being a large international hotel, the Kigali Marriott has a number of facilities for guests to use. The Saray Spa offers a range of beauty treatments including scrubs, body wraps and massages. Guests can also choose to work out in the on-site gym.
