Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival at the airport or pickup at your residence/hotel in Kigali, a safari tour guide from Izere Safaris will meet up with you to brief you on the itinerary plan for your 2 Days gorilla trekking safari. After a review of your safari plan, you will be driven off to Musanze District where Volcanoes National Park is found. The journey from Kigali to Musanze is about 2 hours (115 kilometers).

Enjoy the scenic drive through the different villages and town along the way. The amazing and breathtaking great scenery of the thousand hills with exhilarating views of valleys and pathways to different homes and trading centers will treat your eyes. On arrival, we shall check-in for accommodation at either Hotel MuhaburaMountain Gorilla View LodgeBisate Lodge depending on your budget plans and arrangement. Be expectant to meet the massive mountain gorillas on your trek after briefing from ranger guides early the next. We advise that you get enough sleep the day before so that you prepared for both a short hike and along hike depending on where the gorillas nested.

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Wake up early in the morning at 7:00 am to have breakfast at the hotel/lodge then your driver guide will drive you to the park headquarters in Kinigi to attend to a gorilla trekking briefing from the park officials. You will then be divided into groups of 8 persons and be assigned to specific gorilla groups to trek on the day with your ranger guide. After a comprehensive briefing on the basics of gorilla trekking, you start your trek into the jungles of volcanoes national park. For some gorilla groups, you are expected to drive out a bit before starting the trek. You are advised to take a long a porter to help with your day pack and some of your gadgets, it is easy to think that you do not need one but they can be helpful if the gorillas nested further a way from your starting point. Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Kigali for Your Accommodation

On your first day of the 9 Days Rwanda cultural tour, you will be warmly welcomed by a tour guide from Izere Safaris upon your arrival at the Airport. The guide will highlight to you the typical cultural tour experience in Rwanda and some of the things that you need to expect on this tour itinerary. Immediately you are ready to start the tour plan, you will be now transferred to your booked hotel in Kigali where you will enjoy your dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Kigali City Tour

Your second day of the 9 Days Rwanda cultural tour will prepare you for an immense tour of Kigali City where you will visit a number of historical and cultural places in Rwanda. After a tasty breakfast at the hotel, your driver will pick you up to go for the city tour starting with the top historical sites in Kigali. To mention, you will visit for example; the Kigali Solaire, Stade regional, Kigali Genocide memorial site in Gisozi, The Richard Kandt Museum among others. Later in the afternoon, you will have lunch at one of the local restaurants for a taste of Rwanda Local dish. Afterward, your driver will transfer you to Bugesera to visit the reconciliation village, Nyamata, and Ntarama genocide churches. Later you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Transfer to Akagera National Park

As you still reminisce the cultural experiences of the previous day, today you will have breakfast in the morning as usual then start off the journey to the Akagera National Park, located in the Eastern province of Rwanda. The journey will pass you via Imigongo cultural center where you will have your lunch and also get a chance to practice the ancient artisan crafts making in the region. In the late afternoon, arrive and check in at the Akagera National Park which is a registered center of willdlife game viewing in Rwanda. Dinner and Overnight at Akagera Game Lodge or Ruzizi Tented Lodge/Camp.

Day 4: Transfer to Akagera National Park

2 Days Akagera Wildlife SafariWake up to a cup of coffee with a delicious breakfast meal then head out for a game drive experience in the park where we will look out for the big game including Elephants, Lions, Black Rhinos, Buffaloes, Zebras, Giraffes, Waterbucks, Bushbucks, and many more animals. The game drives in Akagera national park usually take place in the northern sector of the park. You will also have a chance to bound to see a variety of bird species, later return and rest as you wait for your lunch. You will have lunch and then prepare to depart to the northern part of the park to visit the pastoralist heritage experience.

Day 5: Morning Game Drive & Boat Trip on Lake Ihema

Another day of the Cultural tour experience in Rwanda. Today you will wake up very early for a morning game drive where you will predators hunting for their prey. At about 10 am, return to the lodge for your breakfast and then proceed to Lake Ihema for a stunning boat ride to spot aquatic wildlife like crocodiles, hippos and over 50 species of water birds like pelicans, sunbirds among others. Later return to the lodge for an evening village walk and interaction with the locals then retire for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Visit Rwanda's Twin Lakes, Ruhengeri en-route

Early in the morning, have your breakfast and check out of the lodge for another amusing day of the safari itinerary. Today, your driver-guide will transfer you to Ruhengeri (Formerly known as Musanze) with en-route stopovers for lunch and a peculiar visit to the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. You will also be accompanied to take a tour of the community project initiatives like brick making sites and bee hive locations among others. Here you will feel the real Rwandan lifestyle and cultural experience with the locals. Afterward, the journey continues to Ruhengeri with several photography opportunities. We will arrive at the headquarters of Volcanoes National Park in the evening to check-in at the lodge as you ready for the gorilla trekking adventure due the next day.

Day 7: Gorilla Tracking in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

The long awaited day is here, be anxious to meet the giants of the wild. Hoping that you had enough rest and sleep, today we wake up very early to transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi to meet with other groups of trekkers for a gorilla trek briefing for the officials. The gorilla trekking adventure begins immediately after the briefing and this is the most awesome and unforgettable moment ever on this tour itinerary. You will have a break to have your lunch and on meeting the gorillas, you are only permitted to spend one hour with them. Later on, after Gorilla trekking, visit Buhanga forest for Kinigi Cultural Village with dinner and overnight. Meal plan – Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6: Rwanda Cultural Tour Excursion - Transfer to Kivu

After your breakfast, you will check out of your hotel/lodge and transfer to the beautiful Lake Kivu. On your way, you will visit the Banana and Sorghum beer production plants and you could even have a taste if you dare. You will then proceed to the shores of Lake Kivu to relax. Dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Visit Butare, Transfer back to Kigali

After breakfast, transfer to Butare, “the intellectual town of Rwanda”. Visit the Basilica of Kabagayi, the ancient King’s palace at Nyanza, National Museum and drive back to Kigali Airport for your return flight after you have had an en-route lunch and souvenir shopping (Optional). Day 1: Arrival for the 8 Days Rwanda Wildlife Tour

Upon arrival at the airport, you will meet up with your driver guide from Izere Safaris Tour Agency who will warmly welcome you to the “Land of a Thousand Hills”. After a word of briefing about this tour, the guide will transfer you to your hotel, rest for a lunch break and then in the afternoon, you may opt for a brief tour of Kigali city or transfer to Akagera national park reaching late in the evening (2 hours journey drive). Dinner and overnight at your booked hotel/lodge.

Day 2: Wildlife Safari Game Drive in Akagera National Park

On this day, we set early in the morning for a wildlife safari game drive where we will look out for the big game including Elephants, Lions, Black Rhinos, Buffaloes, Zebras, Giraffes, Waterbucks, Bushbucks, and many more animals. The game drives in Akagera national park usually take place in the northern sector of the park. In the late afternoon hours, retire to the lodge for lunch after which you will go for a boat ride safari where you will see various water-loving mammals such as the Hippos and crocodiles. Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

This morning we continue with our Wildlife tour heading to the Nyungwe Forest National Park located south of Rwanda with lunch en-route stopover in Huye formerly known as Butare which is a center of Rwanda cultural heritage and the ethnographic museum of Rwanda that was formerly known as the national museum of Rwanda, here we will learn about the culture and history of the Rwandan people. Late in the evening, we arrive at the park headquarters to check-in for accommodation. Dinner and overnight at your booked lodge/hotel.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park

Have a primates experience on this day of your wildlife tour in Rwanda. Nyungwe Forest is home to over 13 primates the majority being the chimpanzees. The activity of trekking the chimpanzees takes you in the thick Nyungwe forest to experience and appreciate nature. The activity which starts very early in the morning requires you to be at the park headquarters at exactly 5.30 am for a must-attend chimpanzee trekking briefing where you will receive information on how to behave and possible length of your trek. Your ranger guide will lead you to either the Uwinka trailhead or the Cyamudongo sector for chimp trekking. After the trek retire back to the lodge for yet another coming day of yet another safari experience in Rwanda

Day 5: Transfer from Nyungwe to Volcanoes National Park

Wake up to a morning breakfast as you reminisce of the previous primates tracking in the forest. After your breakfast, get prepared for a long hour (6 hours) journey to the Volcanoes national park in Musanze, North of Rwanda arriving late in the evening to check-in at the hotel hoping to meet the gorillas the next morning. Meal plan – Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

The trek to the gorillas starts with a briefing at the park headquarters in Kinigi where you are assigned a ranger and gorilla family to trek. The trek through the jungle of volcanoes national park is a fulfilling unforgettable experience that many people look to undertake. The trek can last from an hour or less to several hours later depending on where the gorillas nested the previous night – you need to be relatively fit to enjoy this experience and remember to pace yourself as you trek.

Day 7: Transfer to Lake Kivu (Gisenyi)

Day 2: Early Morning Game Drive, Boat Ride along Lake Ihema

Day 4: Gorilla Tracking Experience in Volcanoes National Park

This will be the best day of your Wildlife Safari Holiday in Rwanda. On this day, you will wake up to a tasty breakfast and then our driver-guide will be available to transfer you to the headquarters of the Volcanoes National Park, where you will attend to a gorilla trek briefing from the ORTPN wardens giving you a chance to learn of the gorilla groups available in the park, the group you will particularly visit and the Dos and DONTs of the trekking activity. After the briefing, you will then head for gorilla tracking, an activity which usually takes between 1-6 hours until you see the gorilla family assigned to your trekking group as it largely depends on the movement of the Gorillas on the previous and that particular day. Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Kigali City

Upon arrival at Kanombe International Airport in Kigali, you will be picked by our tour guide who will brief you on the highlights of your 8 Days Rwanda primates safari itinerary. Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Today, you will be wake up to a delicious breakfast as you embark on a journey southwards to the Nyungwe Forest National Park. Along the way, you will have an en-route stopover at the Royal King’s Palace in Nyanza for a cultural description where you get an opportunity to learn about the history of Rwandan people. Have a lunch break. In the afternoon, visit the Rwandan national Museum where you will get more information about the country’s history and culture. Day 3: Nyungwe Forest National Park Chimpanzee Trekking

Have a primates safari experience on this day of your wildlife tour in Rwanda. Nyungwe Forest is home to over 13 primates the majority being the chimpanzees. The activity of trekking the chimpanzees takes you in the thick Nyungwe forest to experience and appreciate nature. The activity which starts very early in the morning requires you to be at the park headquarters at exactly 5.30 am for a must-attend chimpanzee trekking briefing where you will receive information on how to behave and possible length of your trek. Your ranger guide will lead you to either the Uwinka trailhead or the Cyamudongo sector for chimp trekking. After the trek retire back to the lodge for yet another coming day of yet another safari experience in Rwanda

Day 4: Full Day Nature Walk in Nyungwe Forest

Today after early morning breakfast, you will be required to report to the park headquarters for briefing about nature walk in the forest from where you will set out for the forest walk which will enable you to experience the park’s unique tourist attractions such as the waterfalls. Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 5: Transfer to Kibuye along the Shores of Lake Kivu

You will be driven to  Kibuye which located on the shores of the lake.  The town has one of the country’s most attractive lake ports which will offer you spectacular views of the lake. Spend the whole day exploring the lake. Dinner and overnight at the hotel. 

Day 6: Transfer to Gisenyi - Ruhengeri

Today, after early morning breakfast, you will be driven to Gisenyi. The town is characterized by the waterfront and sandy beaches which are good for relaxation. In the afternoon, transfer to Ruhengeri. On arrival, you will check in at your booked hotel while awaiting gorilla trekking the following day. Dinner and overnight at the guest house. 

Day 7: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Today, you will go to the park headquarters for briefing from the park rangers. You will be allocated gorilla groups from the park rangers who will take you to view the gorillas and you will spend 1 hour with the mountain gorillas as you watch them feed the young ones. Return to the Kinigi guest house for overnight and dinner.

Day 8: Transfer to Kigali City, Departure

Today, you will be driven to Kigali which is the country’s capital city. Visit different memorial genocide sites and different attractions. Proceed and have lunch in Kigali town, In case you have some time before your flight you can have a short Kigali city tour.

Full Day Itinerary for the Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari

Your 1 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Tour will start from Kigali City as early as 4:30 am to have breakfast and get yourself ready for the journey to Ruhengeri (Musanze) district where we arrive at the park headquarters for the briefing from the officials and ranger guides about the gorilla trekking Dos and Don’ts, the gorilla family you will visit on the day, and how long it may take to find that particular group.

After the basics of gorilla trekking, you will be divided into groups of eight each with a given gorilla family to visit. Remember. in Rwanda, there are 10 gorilla families which can be visited for gorilla trekking encounters. The allocation of the gorilla group you will visit largely depends on your trekking ability ranging from the medium, simple and hard trek. You are advised to be realistic with your fitness and health to pick the right trek which will not overstrain you.

On a typical day, gorilla trek usually lasts between 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on which family you are assigned to visit. When you meet the gorillas, you will have the most thrilling experience as you encounter the Mountain gorillas, watch them play, guard their young ones, and you ponder on their human-like intelligence. After an hour with the gorillas, you will drive back to the hotel for lunch and then get back to Kigali for your outbound flight departure.

Day 1: Transfer To Volcanoes National Park

Day 2: Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park

You leave your hotel room so early and you will track one of the habituated Gorilla groups who can tolerate the presence of humans for a brief period every day. The time taken to track the gorillas can take as little as half an hour to as much as 8 hours!

Your track will be an exciting journey along forested slopes, entwined vines, bushes and bamboo before you eventually reach the gorillas’ current location. Your guide will point out signs of previous gorilla activity, including dung, nests and chewed bamboo shoots. Once the gorillas have been located, you will be allowed to spend with them a maximum of one hour. Coming face-to-face with a mountain gorilla is an exciting experience. This is a fantastic and privileged opportunity to get up close and personal with Rwanda’s own ‘Gorillas in the Mist’.

Day 1: Kigali To Volcanoes National Park

Your driver will pick you up from your accommodation or the airport and start off the journey to Musanze, Rwanda’s second largest city after Kigali.

On your arrival in Musanze, you will be so close to the five Virunga volcanoes, Musanze will be your base from which to explore Volcanoes National Park.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

You will have an early breakfast at your hotel, and proceed directly to the Volcanoes National Park’s headquarters to meet your guides. After completing the briefing, you’ll embark on the once in a lifetime experience of tracking the endangered mountain gorillas.

The time taken to trek gorillas depends on where the gorilla family you are going to trek is located, and it also depends on the weather conditions. It can take anywhere from two up to six hours of trekking through the mountainous forest at relatively high altitudes. Physical fitness is definitely recommended for those wishing to undertake the excursion.

Getting into contact with the gorillas after you have found them is one of the most memorable experiences you will ever have on this safari. You’ll be lucky enough to come within mere meters of a family of these rare and beautiful animals, observing their family differences and learning a bit more about each gorilla’s distinct personality in serene silence.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking

On the third day, we shall track another of the Volcanoes National Park’s primate inhabitants, the golden monkeys which can only be found in the Volcanoes Conservation Area.

You’ll trek through the dense stands of bamboo in search of these playful golden monkeys, who are well habituated to visitors. You’ll be able to view the golden monkeys playing, feeding on bamboo, and leaping from tree to tree with the help of there long tails. While your time with the gorillas is limited to an hour, there is ample time to see the inquisitive creatures in their natural habitat. After a hot lunch at your lodge, you’ll then return to Kigali for your onward travel and that marks the end of 3 days golden monkeys and gorillas safaris.

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

On your day of arrival at Kigali airport, our experienced driver/ guide will collect pick you from the airport and have a short stopover in Kigali, After the stopover, you will drive of to the east of Rwanda through the scenic and panoramic landscapes to the Parc National des Volcans.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Set off early morning to have the once in a lifetime opportunity to venture on an exhilarating visit to the Mountain Gorilla’s natural habitat. The forest is made of shady bamboo thickets with sensational views of lush green tropical rainforests, alive with the calls of tropical birds. After your briefing at the forest head quarters, you will be divided into groups of 8 people then you head fpor the gorilla trek. Your guide will help you to locate the gorillas and you will be able to spend sometime with them.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking in
Volcanoes National Park and transfer to Lake Kivu

Volcanoes National Park is home to five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains (Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo peaks) which are covered in rainforest and bamboo. This is the park where the world-renowned zoologist Dian Fossey carried out her research about mountain gorillas. On this day you also venture into the forests of Volcanoes National Park to track the rare Golden Monkeys.

Thereafter, your journey continues to Lake Kivu.

Day 4: Lake Kivu transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

On the 4th day of the 7 days Rwanda gorilla and primate safari you go to the green fields of tea and coffee plantations to Gisenyi on the shorelines of Lake Kivu – which is situated at 1.461 m above sea level.  Lake Kivu is the best location for all those interested in water activities such as sailing, wind surfing and sport fishing, boat cruise. There is also the local cuisine to explore as well as dance like the intore dance, drum performances and other cultural activities that represent the Rwandan culture.

Later that day, your journey continues to the Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Day 5: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to lots of chimpanzees in Rwanda. Unlike gorilla trekking which requires a gorilla permit, chimpanzee trekking does not require a  permit. Chimpanzees are easy to trek. Your tour guide will take you through the forest following bamboo leftovers in order to be able to find them. Once you find them, the chimpanzees are very friendly and they get excited when they see cameras.

Day 6: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest and Transfer to Kigali

Day 1: Arrival at Kigali International Airport

You will be picked up by your tour guide on your arrival at the airport and be driven to the East. The driver will drive through the beautiful plains, composed of dense green lands, broad-leafed woodland, lighter acacia woodland, and rolling grassland through the hills and valleys, also with an extensive series of lakes and wetlands linked by papyrus swamps forming a sprawling wetland, as you check-in Akagera Safari lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Akagera National Park Game drive
After an early morning breakfast, you will join your ranger in an open vehicle to start off your safari into the Akagera National Park. While at Akagera, you will have a game drive which gives you the opportunity to spot a variety of wild animals such as elephants, buffalos, lions, Masai giraffe, gazelles, impala, baboons, oribi, Butchel’s zebra, topi, bush baby, leopard, and bushbuck. Return to the hotel for lunch.

After lunch, you will proceed for a boat trip on Lake Ihema, which is well known for habouring water animals like crockdails and hippos, coupled with the large concentration of bird life; over 525 species of different birds identified. Unique species such as Shoe billed stocks and papyrus gonolek can be seen in Akagera.
Return to your hotel for dinner and chat about today’s sightings!

Day 3: Akagera – Volcanoes National Park
After an early breakfast, return to Kigali and connect to Park National des Volcans (PNV) in the north for Mountain gorilla tracking. We shall be welcomed at mountain Gorilla’s Nest  near Kinigi station – Park Headquarters for lunch.
In the afternoon, we shall take a walk through the nearby forests to nearby crater lakes on the volcanoes, bird viewing, and photography. Dinner and overnight at Mountain Gorilla’s Nest/Kinigi guest house.

Day 4: Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda 
You will have an early morning breakfast at 7:ooam local time and then transfer to Kiningi where you will be briefed by park ranger on how to carry out gorilla tracking. Hiking on the slippery and muddy Volcanoes slopes with nettles during the wet season is quite challenging. But the exciting encounter with mountain gorillas erase all the bad memories! You will be privilledged to stay with these close relatives of man (mountain Gorillas) for at least an hour for observation and photography.

In the evening you will the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Return to your lodge for dinner and chill at the fireplace.

Day 5: Final Day of the Safari
Have breakfast early in the morning,go on a half-day hike to Mt Bisoke, the hike is rewarded with the sight of a beautiful crater lake, take photos and later connect to Kigali International Airport for your flight back home.
