Day 1: Transfer To Volcanoes National Park

A driver guide from Izere Safaris will pick you from Kigali airport.

After only 2 hours driving you will reach the lodge. The lodge has been built using environmentally friendly local materials such as Bamboos made fitted by local community workmanship. Day 2: Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park

You leave your hotel room so early and you will track one of the habituated Gorilla groups who can tolerate the presence of humans for a brief period every day. The time taken to track the gorillas can take as little as half an hour to as much as 8 hours!

Your track will be an exciting journey along forested slopes, entwined vines, bushes and bamboo before you eventually reach the gorillas’ current location. Your guide will point out signs of previous gorilla activity, including dung, nests and chewed bamboo shoots. Once the gorillas have been located, you will be allowed to spend with them a maximum of one hour. Coming face-to-face with a mountain gorilla is an exciting experience. This is a fantastic and privileged opportunity to get up close and personal with Rwanda’s own ‘Gorillas in the Mist’.

Day 1: Kigali To Volcanoes National Park

Your driver will pick you up from your accommodation or the airport and start off the journey to Musanze, Rwanda’s second largest city after Kigali.

On your arrival in Musanze, you will be so close to the five Virunga volcanoes, Musanze will be your base from which to explore Volcanoes National Park.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

You will have an early breakfast at your hotel, and proceed directly to the Volcanoes National Park’s headquarters to meet your guides. After completing the briefing, you’ll embark on the once in a lifetime experience of tracking the endangered mountain gorillas.

The time taken to trek gorillas depends on where the gorilla family you are going to trek is located, and it also depends on the weather conditions. It can take anywhere from two up to six hours of trekking through the mountainous forest at relatively high altitudes. Physical fitness is definitely recommended for those wishing to undertake the excursion.

Getting into contact with the gorillas after you have found them is one of the most memorable experiences you will ever have on this safari. You’ll be lucky enough to come within mere meters of a family of these rare and beautiful animals, observing their family differences and learning a bit more about each gorilla’s distinct personality in serene silence.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking

On the third day, we shall track another of the Volcanoes National Park’s primate inhabitants, the golden monkeys which can only be found in the Volcanoes Conservation Area.

You’ll trek through the dense stands of bamboo in search of these playful golden monkeys, who are well habituated to visitors. You’ll be able to view the golden monkeys playing, feeding on bamboo, and leaping from tree to tree with the help of there long tails. While your time with the gorillas is limited to an hour, there is ample time to see the inquisitive creatures in their natural habitat. After a hot lunch at your lodge, you’ll then return to Kigali for your onward travel and that marks the end of 3 days golden monkeys and gorillas safaris.

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

On your day of arrival at Kigali airport, our experienced driver/ guide will collect pick you from the airport and have a short stopover in Kigali, After the stopover, you will drive of to the east of Rwanda through the scenic and panoramic landscapes to the Parc National des Volcans.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Set off early morning to have the once in a lifetime opportunity to venture on an exhilarating visit to the Mountain Gorilla’s natural habitat. The forest is made of shady bamboo thickets with sensational views of lush green tropical rainforests, alive with the calls of tropical birds. After your briefing at the forest head quarters, you will be divided into groups of 8 people then you head fpor the gorilla trek. Your guide will help you to locate the gorillas and you will be able to spend sometime with them.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking in
Volcanoes National Park and transfer to Lake Kivu

Volcanoes National Park is home to five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains (Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo peaks) which are covered in rainforest and bamboo. This is the park where the world-renowned zoologist Dian Fossey carried out her research about mountain gorillas. On this day you also venture into the forests of Volcanoes National Park to track the rare Golden Monkeys.

Thereafter, your journey continues to Lake Kivu.

Day 4: Lake Kivu transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

On the 4th day of the 7 days Rwanda gorilla and primate safari you go to the green fields of tea and coffee plantations to Gisenyi on the shorelines of Lake Kivu – which is situated at 1.461 m above sea level.  Lake Kivu is the best location for all those interested in water activities such as sailing, wind surfing and sport fishing, boat cruise. There is also the local cuisine to explore as well as dance like the intore dance, drum performances and other cultural activities that represent the Rwandan culture.

Later that day, your journey continues to the Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Day 5: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to lots of chimpanzees in Rwanda. Unlike gorilla trekking which requires a gorilla permit, chimpanzee trekking does not require a  permit. Chimpanzees are easy to trek. Your tour guide will take you through the forest following bamboo leftovers in order to be able to find them. Once you find them, the chimpanzees are very friendly and they get excited when they see cameras.

Day 6: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest and Transfer to Kigali

Day 1: Arrival at Kigali International Airport

You will be picked up by your tour guide on your arrival at the airport and be driven to the East. The driver will drive through the beautiful plains, composed of dense green lands, broad-leafed woodland, lighter acacia woodland, and rolling grassland through the hills and valleys, also with an extensive series of lakes and wetlands linked by papyrus swamps forming a sprawling wetland, as you check-in Akagera Safari lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Akagera National Park Game drive
After an early morning breakfast, you will join your ranger in an open vehicle to start off your safari into the Akagera National Park. While at Akagera, you will have a game drive which gives you the opportunity to spot a variety of wild animals such as elephants, buffalos, lions, Masai giraffe, gazelles, impala, baboons, oribi, Butchel’s zebra, topi, bush baby, leopard, and bushbuck. Return to the hotel for lunch.

After lunch, you will proceed for a boat trip on Lake Ihema, which is well known for habouring water animals like crockdails and hippos, coupled with the large concentration of bird life; over 525 species of different birds identified. Unique species such as Shoe billed stocks and papyrus gonolek can be seen in Akagera.
Return to your hotel for dinner and chat about today’s sightings!

Day 3: Akagera – Volcanoes National Park
After an early breakfast, return to Kigali and connect to Park National des Volcans (PNV) in the north for Mountain gorilla tracking. We shall be welcomed at mountain Gorilla’s Nest  near Kinigi station – Park Headquarters for lunch.
In the afternoon, we shall take a walk through the nearby forests to nearby crater lakes on the volcanoes, bird viewing, and photography. Dinner and overnight at Mountain Gorilla’s Nest/Kinigi guest house.

Day 4: Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda 
You will have an early morning breakfast at 7:ooam local time and then transfer to Kiningi where you will be briefed by park ranger on how to carry out gorilla tracking. Hiking on the slippery and muddy Volcanoes slopes with nettles during the wet season is quite challenging. But the exciting encounter with mountain gorillas erase all the bad memories! You will be privilledged to stay with these close relatives of man (mountain Gorillas) for at least an hour for observation and photography.

In the evening you will the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Return to your lodge for dinner and chill at the fireplace.

Day 5: Final Day of the Safari
Have breakfast early in the morning,go on a half-day hike to Mt Bisoke, the hike is rewarded with the sight of a beautiful crater lake, take photos and later connect to Kigali International Airport for your flight back home.

When you arrive at the Airport, your guide will pick you up and transfer you to  Volcanoes National Park with a private vehicle and driver. Your guide will take you on a Kigali city tour. Have breakfast early in the morning and go to ORTPN offices where the briefing is held. you will be divided into groups of eight and then you head for gorilla trekking. While on your trek, you will be able to see other animals in this forest like, the colorful birds and chattering of the rare golden monkey, plus the elusive populations of buffalo and elephant.

Gorilla trekking is a very tiresome activity but the excitement of getting into contact with these endangered gorillas will wipe away your intricacy of the strenuous trek. You will be allowed to spend some time about an hour with these gorillas watch the adults feeding their young ones, see how they live in the rain forests.

After breakfast, you will set off to the forest to track the Golden Monkeys. You will encounter other primate species as vervet monkeys, baboons, and a huge variety of bird species and butterflies. You will be picked from the airport by our guide and transferred with a private vehicle to Volcanoes National Park. Your guide will take you on a tour around Kigali city. The city has a number of new prosperity features, a number of thriving markets and it also features the mountain terrain famous in Rwanda.

The Kigali city tour gives you contrast to its recent history. The survivors and others whose families were murdered in Rwanda´s genocide 1994 have not been forgotten, the Memorial sites and centers were put in place for dignified remembrance of loved ones lost. The memorial sites are a place of reflection and learning for the wider community, both in Rwanda and internationally.

Day hikes to see the gorilla families can be strenuous on tracks climbing through the forest, and time is very limited once contact is made with the gorilla families. It is a rare and memorable experience to visit with these giant cousins of man.

Then, suddenly, the trail enters into the national park, engrossing trekkers in the strange closeness of the rainforest, alive with the calls of colorful birds and chattering of the rare golden monkey, and besieged with fresh spoor of the mountains’ elusive populations of buffalo and elephant.

Gorilla trekking is a very tiring but worthwhile encounter with these gentle giants. The excitement of your coming across with these gorillas will wipe away your intricacy of the strenuous trek.
